hey Raven 1, i have three questions. first i've been reading a lot of NCCC blogs and they almost all seem to be women writing them, it's not really an issue for me but what would you say the guy:girl ratio is? secondly is the firefighting group more fun/exciting than normal NCCC? and last, what tests besides the endurance test do the firefighters have to pass?
I.E. Broomfield, On our team, our notifications varied quite a bit. Some of us found out months in advance, and others the day before it was the day to leave. The goal is to be patient. The majority of the members on our team were waitlisted, so its a good thing if that happens. I personally applied for the application deadline before the winter term, and had my application carried over. So it varies. It is worth the wait though. Hope that helped. ~Henry from NCCC Raven 1~

On our team we have 4 guys and 6 girls which is about avg. as far as our Atlantic Region Campus is concerned. Firefighting is a very exciting opportunity! Feel free to read about our team members experiences with it on our blog. Firefighters had the endurance test, and they were also told to write a letter of interest this year. There is also a training they will send you to should you be accepted as a Fire Fighter, and you will be required to do 5 Physical Trainings a week, instead of the normal 3 everyone else has to do. Is there anything I can do to get my chances of getting into Americorps better? I feel it's my calling and it's what I really want to do.

Samuel Watts, All excellent questions! The main thing to remember when going through the application process is to be flexible and do what you can as soon as possible. Some of us were waitlisted or accepted for service months before, and others on the team found out the day before. It is important not to stress or think anything is out of the ordinary. They are working diligently. The best thing you can do to raise your chances is just to be diligent in completing all aspects of the application process thoroughly, honestly, and in a timely manner. I have been considering doing NCCC for literally years now and I am afraid the April 1 deadline is my last opportunity since I will be turning 24 in January! Ah! My first question is about how feasible it is to live on your stipened? I don't have a ton of cash money saved up that I would be able to use to subsidize the limited stipened with. With room and board provided what other things do you find yourself spending money on and is it possible to save money while participating in NCCC? My second question is are many NCCCers in relationships back home? I am in an almost 3 year relationship and am wondering how others have dealt with the long distance relationship. My third question is were any of you on the fence about applying as a leader and if so what swayed your decision and were you happy with your decision to either apply as a leader or not. Thanks for your answers and your service!!
These are very common worries, but do not fret. First off, if you are over the age 24 limit, you can always apply for a team leader position as there is no age limit on that. Some of us are looking to apply as team leaders in the future. I for one decided to start off as a Corps Member to learn and familiarize myself with the "AmeriWorld" and learn the responsibilities of a Team Leader position before I apply for one. It is a lot of work, but as any one of them will tell you is well worth it. Secondly, it is normal and expected for everyone to survive on the living stipend you receive. The team will get a different fund for food, depending on how many team members you have. The stipend is really used for what you will need to survive. It is a learning process. You find yourself spending more money on deodorant and socks, than you do the latest video game or movies. It all depends on how well you spend it, and how much you can save up. Many people, including our team, also use the stipend to travel and see the local attractions or nearby cities. So do not stress about this aspect. It all depends on what you want to do, and how much you are willing to spend. Finally, long distance relationships. We have a team member who is in one, and she has not had any challenges out of the ordinary. It is fully possible to keep a long distance relationship. I do not however feel comfortable giving advice on what you should do, but rather just speak from experience of what I have seen done. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

As it's stated in the handbook, meals are provided. However, I cannot have gluten or dairy. Are meals still made to service everyone on the team or would that person be subject to buying their own food?
Jamie, This is a very common concern. Teams are allotted a fund for grocery shopping depending on how many members are on the team. Teams will then be responsible for shopping for the food requirements of their team, and the team leader is to ensure this occurs. In our corps, we have many people with dietary restrictions, and everyone is very open to meet those expectations and learn from their lives. There are vegans, vegetarians (our team has 3), lactose intolerance, and others. Do not let this hinder you from participating in this experience! Good Luck!

Divine, Excellent questions! Of course you can apply! We had a corps member this year turn 18 the third day on campus! So definately give it a shot!Also, AmeriCorps NCCC provides assistance with childcare to individuals who are eligible. I am not however sure what the eligibility requirements are. Hurry Hurry Hurry! Hey Raven 1 It's PFC Watts again. My application got waitlisted the other day, I was curious what are the chances of actually getting selected to a campus. Do I need to start prepareing or do I just sit it out and wait and hope and pray I get in and not be prepared? Like do I need to bring a set amount of money with me or is the food covered at least for the first 2-4 weeks (not sure if they hold a week back on the $200.)
